Brinkmann Audio’s room was packed whenever I visited them, and that attests to the continued popularity of this high end manufacturer that is world famous for their turntables. Prominently displayed was their limited Edition Anniversary table, consisting of the Balance turntable, 12.1 tonearm and MC-ti cartridge combo. Also included in the package is a custom made isolation platform from HRS. An impressive-looking package indeed.
Also making its debut at the show is the Bardo ‘entry-level’ table. It utilizes a direct drive system that was first used in their more expensive Oasis model. Unlike the direct drives of old, the Bardo’s system is more of an electromagnetic drive as it uses a ring-like permanent magnet contained in the bearing of the disc drive. Four precisely adjusted air-core inductors are mounted inside the base platter, which are in turn rotated by the ensuing magnetic field.
An interesting observation that I made in the Brinkmann room was the use of Harmonix RF-999 MT spike bases under the Verity Audio speakers that were used for demo. Those of you who have used these amazing devices will be fully aware of the almost magical effect they have on virtually any speaker, regardless of price or size.
Chris Feickert’s (of Dr. Feickert Analog fame) focus this year was on his new baby, the curiously named Woodpecker. Whatever the name may be, there is no denying that his new entry-level turntable is an excellent value for money product. Adapting the same motor and platter into a simpler and more streamlined design, the Woodpecker made some very impressive sounds when partnered with some tube gear from Trafomatic Audio and WLM speakers. It definitely did not sound entry-level by any means!
The bigger DFA Triple turntable was seen on demo in another room featuring Emille electronics from Korea and Rethm horn speakers.
